The Diana moment embodied in Season 4 of The Crown

ENTERTAINMENT – One Of My Favorite Things, The Crown, Releases Upcoming Season 4 On Netflix

The popular and much anticipated fourth season of The Crown is releasing on Netflix on November 15, 2020. Netflix is leading us on a journey of following Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) as this royal family is affixed with the protection of the line of succession by procuring a suitable bride for an unmarried 30 year-old Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor). As the British nation feels the weight of political divisiveness of policies originated by the first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson).

The Season 4 trailer reflects the high tension that rises between Thatcher and the Queen. It worsens with Thatcher’s actions that take Britain into the Falklands War, creating a conflict within the Commonwealth. The Crown has been revealing and divisive in its historical storytelling. The entire season will hopefully deliver with the same impact and reveal of intricate relationships and conflicts within this very royal family.

Grimm TV Series

Grimm TV Series stars David Giuntoli, inspired by Grimm Fairytale Stories

The Wonderful World of Grimm

Life in a COVID environment just breeds binge watching and I have binged on several, specifically what I determined as fun and enjoyable TV procedural projects. Recently I discovered Grimm staring David Giuntoli. I have been in love with creators of whole new worlds since I initially fell hard and fast for Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek. So much time and talent is involved in the creation of a fantastical origination.

A World Filled With Back Lore From The Grimm Fairytales

I found the same type of incredible story development and character in the creation of the modern day world (2011-2017 TV series run) of Grimm. What an original idea to create a crime drama serial in the setting of an unknown criminal world of Wesen.

The creators of Grimm certainly have an arsenal of impact from its writers, particularly David Greenwalt who wrote and created for other fantastical serials that I have enjoyed: Moonlight staring Alex O-Loughlin, Angel staring David Boreanaz, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series) staring Sarah Michelle Geller. What impressed me about the story as it progressed across six seasons was the commitment to story, drama, and fun. All of the characters were given a rollercoaster to ride on.

Nothing was sacred and everything was up for change. Humor was weaved in quite well and relationships that began as sacred and tender were upturned and confrontational, who I liked and loved became mortal enemies to Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby), cast leads and partners on the show, as the story reached across boundaries and countries. What happened in the wake of it all were the torn-down, long-lasting familiar relationships as each episode unfolded and each season began and ended without any apologies. This was no small viewing adventure; Seasons 1-5 include 22 episodes, each are 43 minutes in length without commercial breaks.

Who I loved when the series began, Juliette played by Bitsie Tulloch, became a mortal enemy that I waited for Nick to take down.

I sat and laughed at my own feelings that were let out to really enjoy the highs and dark mystical lows that were so well crafted and countered.

Season 1 was given a rough start ranking of 53, but only by critics, the audience adored it with a rating of 88 from its beginnings.

Seasons 2, 3, 4 and 5, all received a 100 from critics, and the final season 6 did well in its review with an 83. Not all shows end this well with its viewing audience.

Hello Sopranos and Game of Thrones, who rode high and popular during their season run but oh so many fans were deeply thrashed and upset with their series ending. Well this is not an issue with Grimm. It was such an original idea to use the well-known children stories of Grimm as the backdrop of a cop drama in the setting of a highly artistic community in Portland Oregon. The eternal gray haze, green forestry, and cloudy skies were a perfect setting for this unworldly community of beasts and creatures.

Spoiler alert! Grimm begins in an almost romanticized fantasy; Nick is in love with Juliette and committed for all of eternity to her. He demonstrates this over, and over, and over again. His love endures her kidnapping, her attacks, her memory loss but oh in the end, first comes betrayal, then setting fire to his family treasures and finally the setup for the murder of his mother, one, two, three, you’re finally out! So much happens in between and in the midst of this story. But it’s the resolution that the watcher doesn’t see coming. This is truly a writing gift, to drive an audience into romance and love of character and then to turn them away and into the arms of a beast could not have been foreseen. I loved every minute of this ride. I was mesmerized by the setting and the romance and fell in love with Nick’s soon to be fiancé, Juliette, but even I couldn’t forgive the massive trail of betrayal and began to root for the beast to win her love for the Grimm in the end. What can I say, a girl’s gotta have some fun during COVID-19!

Ruby Rose as Batwoman on the CW Network

ENTERTAINMENT – Why ‘Batwoman’ Star Ruby Rose Left the CW Series

Ruby Rose’s surprise exit from the CW series “Batwoman” stemmed from an ill fit between star and production.

According to multiple sources, Rose was unhappy with the long hours required of her as the series lead, which led to friction on the set.

It was thus decided by her and the network and studio, Warner Bros. Television, that they would part ways. Reps for Rose, Warner Bros., and The CW declined to comment.

Rose’s time on “Batwoman” marked the first TV starring role of her career. She previously appeared on Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” and has appeared in supporting roles in several films to date.

Given the sudden nature of it, speculation has been rampant as to the reason for Rose’s exit from the series. It was speculated that it had something to do with pain associated with an emergency surgery Rose underwent for two herniated discs, but a source familiar with the situation tells Variety that Rose’s decision “had nothing to do with her health or injury.”

Rose has also been open about her mental health issues in the past. Back in October, she posted on Instagram “I’ve struggled with mental health my entire life.” She went on to say that she had attempted suicide multiple times and had been hospitalized at different times in her life.

In a statement issued announcing Rose’s departure, the studio, network, and Berlanti Productions said they would be seeking “a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”

“Batwoman” was renewed for a second season back in January. The show centers on Kate Kane, the cousin of Bruce Wayne and an out lesbian who assumes the titular mantle of Batwoman to protect Gotham City.

AMC Theatres’ Fight With Universal Pictures

ENTERTAINMENT – Adam Driver to Star in Jeff Nichols’ Next Film ‘Yankee Comandante’ (EXCLUSIVE)

By Justin Kroll. Reprint from Variety

Adam Driver (Star Wars star) will star in an adaptation of “Yankee Comandante,” Variety has learned.

“Mud” director Jeff Nichols is writing and helming the pic, marking a reunion for the pair, who worked together on 2016’s “Midnight Special.” While production start dates are up in the air due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has shuttered the industry, sources say shooting is expected to begin in 2021.

Imperative Entertainment and 30West are in discussions with select studios about the project, with the package shopped to distributors earlier this week.

The film is based on David Grann’s New Yorker article about two people who rose to the rank of comandante during the Cuban Revolution. One was Che Guevara. The other was a man from Ohio.

Read about the new Wonder Woman 1984 film blogpost and review here, Wonder Woman 84 on HBO.

Driver most recently starred in Netflix’s “Marriage Story” and Amazon’s “The Report,” with his role in the former earning him several awards nominations, including an Oscar nod. He also reprised his portrayal of Kylo Ren in the final installment in the Skywalker saga, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

The Problem With Virtual Film Festivals (Column)

Prior to industrywide production shutdowns caused by the coronavirus crisis, Driver was shooting Ridley Scott’s latest period drama, “The Last Duel,” opposite Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Jodie Comer.

Best known for his original dramas like “Midnight Special,” “Take Shelter” and “Mud,” Nichols most recently helmed the critically acclaimed “Loving.” The film earned rave reviews and an Oscar nomination for Ruth Negga.

Driver is repped by Gersh and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. Nichols is repped by CAA and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson and Christopher.

ENTERTAINMENT – All Disney Theme Parks, U.S. Universal Studios Closing Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Reprint from Variety

UPDATED

By Monday, all Disney theme parks worldwide and both Universal Studios in the U.S. will be closed in an effort to prevent the further spread of the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19.

The announcements came in quick succession Thursday, not long after California Gov. Gavin Newsom held a press conference to address the state’s prevention and containment efforts. He outlined the new guidance to cancel or postpone gatherings of 250 people or more in California, but noted that he had spoken with Disney executive chairman Bob Iger on Wednesday, and that casinos, card rooms, theaters, and large parks like Disneyland would be exempt from the recommendations due to “the complexity of their unique circumstances.”

Less than two hours after the presser ended, however, Disney announced that it would temporarily shutter Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure starting Saturday, March 14 through the end of the month, a move that Newsom hailed as a good decision.

“Late last night, California put out a new policy on mass gatherings and engaged in deep conversations with Disney and other companies about how to meet it,” he said in a statement Thursday afternoon. “Using that policy, Disney made the right call in the interest of public health and agreed to shut down their California parks. Expect more announcements like this shortly.”

And the announcements did come shortly. Universal Studios Hollywood issued a statement that it would close beginning Saturday, March 14, with an anticipated re-opening on March 28.

By evening, Walt Disney World in Florida, Disneyland Paris and Universal Studios Orlando said they would shutter by close of business Sunday, March 15, and remain closed through the end of the month.

The Disney Cruise Line is also suspending all new departures beginning Saturday through the end of March. The Walt Disney Company will pay its cast members during that closure period.

Disneyland Resort hotels will remain open until March 16 so guests can make necessary travel accommodations. The hotels at Disney World and Disneyland Paris will remain open until further notice, as will the retail and dining complexes, Disney Springs at Walt Disney World and Disney Village at Disneyland Paris.

Universal CityWalk remains open, as do Universal Orlando’s hotels. Universal Studios Hollywood expects to reopen on March 28, while Universal Studios Orlando will be closed through the end of the month.

“The health and safety of our team members and guests is always our top priority,” said a Universal Studios spokesperson, adding that they would monitor the situation and “provide timely updates as conditions evolve.”

Disneyland Resort foresees opening its doors again at the end of the month. It is only the third time in history that the theme park and resort in Anaheim, Calif., has fully suspended operations. The other instances were the Sept. 11 attacks and the national day of mourning after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

“While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month,” Disney said in its initial statement. “The Hotels of Disneyland Resort will remain open until Monday, March 16 to give guests the ability to make necessary travel arrangements; Downtown Disney will remain open. We will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies. Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time.”

The company added, “Disneyland Resort will work with guests who wish to change or cancel their visits, and will provide refunds to those who have hotel bookings during this closure period.”

Per the California Dept. of Public Health on Wednesday, the new guidance is as follows through the month of March:

The California Department of Public Health finds the following:
  • Large gatherings that include 250 people or more should be postponed or canceled.
    • This includes gatherings such as concerts, conferences, and professional, college, and school sporting events.
  • Smaller gatherings held in venues that do not allow social distancing of six feet per person should be postponed or canceled.
    • This includes gatherings in crowded auditoriums, rooms or other venues.
  • Gatherings of individuals who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should be limited to no more than 10 people.
    • This includes gatherings such as those at retirement facilities, assisted living facilities, developmental homes, and support groups for people with health conditions.
  • A “gathering” is any event or convening that brings together people in a single room or single space at the same time, such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall, cafeteria, or any other indoor or outdoor space.
This applies to all non-essential professional, social, and community gatherings regardless of their sponsor.

Disney was slow to close the doors to its theme parks, despite cancellations of major entertainment industry events like South by Southwest and Coachella. The NBA suspended its season Wednesday night after a player tested positive for coronavirus. More…

Richard Castle’s “Storm Front” Is The Best Ride Of Bond-Like Fun and Hilarious Romance

richard-castle-storm-front-screen-shot-2016-12-05-at-7-58-02-pmI noticed Storm Front on display at my local library and I was intrigued to listen to it on audio CD because I was enduring long commutes.

I didn’t expect to enjoy the ride I got from this story as much as I did.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality caliber of the writing. I was a fan of the TV series, Castle, especially the first season. The character’s edge of Beckett noticeably changed thought by season two and if truth be told I was a little disappointed in the softening edge that she became after season one. Still I picked the show back up a couple of seasons later and began to enjoy the cat and mouse romance written around the central murder drama. In particularly, I was attracted to the writing of Terence Paul Winter.

His Castle story ideas were fresh, always with an original angle and always came with a funny, edgy repertoire of plot. This is what comes through in Storm Front. Who’s writing this story…? I don’t know. I do suspect a name or two, as hinted in the story’s acknowledgement and guest appearances of bestselling authors on Castle. Nevertheless, the story doesn’t disappoint. It begins with high profile murder, on a global scale. I hadn’t read the previous Derrick Storm novels, and so I entered this tale’s story without a familiar history except for what was referenced in Castle’s story in the television series.

Derrick Storm is resurrected thanks to the underpinnings of the CIA in this story. Storm is delightfully funny in a James Bond type of fashion and appeal. He follows the murders centered on high finance and international trade. The villain is apparently an old nemesis who has somehow survived a previous death event orchestrated by the story’s strong hero, Storm. Not only do we travel around the world in this tale, but we also meet so many characters in between that are newly entertaining and so much fun to engage with in the story.

These novels have found another fan; I will be seeking out the former stories and the continuing tales of Derrick Storm. It’s such a great distraction and oh so much fun to just read about and enjoy! What better way to escape the real life complications of one’s present day drama than to delve inside this dark and delightful tale of murder and espionage? This story gets all 5 stars. The writing is truly fun and engaging. It’s been a great commute escape that I’ve had enduring the infamous sig-alerts of Los Angeles traffic. I’m very much looking forward to the next Derrick Storm novel!

Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek

What would it be like if we had a world of totally equal opportunity, if we had no inequality, no disease and no poverty? What if we lived in a world where mankind only needed tobetter itself? What might that world look like?

Such was a world created by Gene Roddenberry, in the original Star Trek series (1966-1969), officers serving and coexisting in rank on a bridge of multi ethnicities. Nichelle Nichols, (cast as Nyota Uhura), has shared the story of how she met MartinLuther King during the Civil Rights Struggle while she contemplated leaving the Star Trek series. She explained how she told Roddenberry, she was leaving the show and he asked her to reconsider, because he was building something of significance. Making a statement about the inequity of a society in which they were living.

Nichols was invited to an event and as luck would have it,she meets Martin Luther King that night. He sought her out and told her how much her show meant to him. Nichols explained that she was leaving the show. He told her, she couldn’t do that. What she represented was too important. Roddenberry’s Star Trek was the only show that he would allow his children to watch because of the multi ethnicities that served together of equal rank (all officers) and of equal capability and training.Nichols decided to stay on the series after her conversation with King.

How Star Trek Influenced Vela Kurv’s Creation

Star Trek had such a resonating tone of truth for me. It spoke to me as a child; I would watch the syndicated reruns everyday after school during my elementary school days. The truth of opportunity and capability resonated with me, as well. How could it not, resonate with everyone, I thought.

This television series did something extraordinary during a very turbulent time in the United States. Star Trek was able to shine a light on inequity, on prejudice and racism and on the plight of war. In fact, so much of the series connected with me, that I was driven to create my own biracial female superhero inside my own world of science fiction, her name is Lorabella Kurv Wiles, also known Vela Kurv. Presently Vela Kurv Begins and Vela Kurv Becomes are in print and for sale on Amazon.

Vela Kurv Finds Its Way To Story

The backstory of Vela Kurv is somewhat surreal. Vela Kurv is part of a line of women created by the combustion of a star, the Constellation Vela. Lorabella becomes Vela Kurv because of her alien and human bloodline. Like all superheroes, she struggles with her own humanity. She has a lesson to learn in dealing with her own father, who happens to also be the commanding officer of Earth’s military.

The struggle of humanity exists for us all in how we view our own world and circumstances. The scales of justice don’t always feel balanced because the struggle for equality has never been just. I can only hope for a world filled with truth, justice and equality for all men, women and children but until that day becomes a reality, I have made make my commentary through the world of Vela Kurv and I show how this biracial female superhero seeks to balance the scales of right and wrong, because she believes that it’s possible. She fights to make justice the prevailing truth inside the world of Vela Kurv.
