Sex/Life on Netflix.

ENTERTAINMENT – Guilty Shades of Pleasure and Hotties Fills “Sex/Life” on Netflix

Billie (Sarah Shahi) finds her desires weighing on her memories of her sexy life in the past.

Netflix presents “Sex/Life” as the story of a love triangle between a woman, her husband, and her past that takes a provocative new look at female identity and desire. It is an eight-part series now available on Netflix. Hindsight is always 100 percent; Billie (Sarah Shahi) finds her desires weighing on her memories of her sexy life in the past. The one who seems to conveniently forget her messy breakups. One thing is for sure, everyone is beautiful inside this story of a married mom looking back at when she let the love of her life get away for the man she married made a family with.

Just about every character who appears in the steamy Netflix series “Sex/Life” is hot.

Just about every character who appears in the steamy Netflix series “Sex/Life” is hot. The suburban housewives and the suburban dads are hot; on this show, “dad bod” means you have a minimum of a six-pack. The best friend is hot, the ex-boyfriend is hot, the boss is hot — even the mentor characters and virtually all the patrons at bars and nightclubs and art galleries and health clubs are pretty darn attractive.

Neon tones accent the scenes flashing back to when Billie (Sarah Shahi) loved the dashing Brad (Adam Demos) on “Sex/Life.”

There’s some doctoral thesis-type exploration of themes such as how a woman will sometimes abandon her authentic self when she gets married to fit into expectations men and society have — but at its core, “Sex/Life” is a good-looking soap opera about good-looking people who have fantastic lives but seem hell-bent on screwing things up in the name of personal gratification.

“Life Means I Kiss Ass. -Vela Kurv” new calendar released today on Amazon.

It’s as if a Lifetime movie crashed head on into an extended episode of the old “Red Shoe Diaries” erotic anthology series from the 1990s. Even as I was rolling my eyes at some of the insanely stupid actions of the lead characters and chuckling at the at-times overwrought score, I can’t deny “Sex/Life” had a certain binge-worthy quality. It’s a soft-core guilty pleasure of a series.

It’s a soft-core guilty pleasure of a series.

Inspired by the novel “44 Chapters About 4 Men” by B.B. Easton and developed for Netflix by Stacy Rukeyser, “Sex/Life” stars Sarah Shahi (“The L Word,” “City on a Hill”) in a luminous performance as the beautiful and sweet Billie Connelly, who has left her party days in New York City behind for the outwardly idyllic life of a Connecticut mom of a preschooler and a newborn who lives in a beautifully appointed home with her hunk of a husband, Cooper (Mike Vogel), a successful investment banker who is the nicest guy in the world, charms the socks off everyone he meets and looks so good in a suit and tie it’s a wonder this guy isn’t running for the United States Senate.

MORE:

Billie loves Cooper, truly she does — but in between breast-feeding and taking her little boy Hudson (of course he’s named Hudson) to preschool and maintaining the household and opening bottles of wine with the other moms in the neighborhood, she has intense flashbacks to her wild days a decade prior as a Ph.D. student in the city, where she lived with her equally whip-smart and equally sexually adventurous best friend Sasha (Margaret Odette) and they tore up the town, hooking up with random dudes on a regular basis. One night Billie met the dashing bad-boy Australian-born record producer Brad Simon (Adam Demos), who took her back to his penthouse loft, which was so awesome there was enough room for a stage for bands to audition for him and a pool on the rooftop deck. Also, Brad was basically Sex in a Leather Jacket, and he rocked Billie’s world and she rocked his world (“Sex/Life” might just set the all-time record for sultry and graphic sex scenes between one couple), and Billie almost instantly fell in love.

So how is it Billie wound up with the wonderful but rather vanilla Cooper instead of the love of her life, Brad?

So how is it Billie wound up with the wonderful but rather vanilla Cooper instead of the love of her life, Brad? She’s beginning to question that herself, as she starts journaling on her laptop about the electric charge she felt when she was with Brad. (If you think Billie carelessly leaves the laptop out and Cooper reads her journal, you’re not not right.) As Cooper begins to question Billie’s fidelity, he finds himself attracted to his boss, Francesca (Li Jun Li), who makes it very clear she’s ready to pounce the moment Cooper leaves Billie. (She literally hands him a key to her apartment.) Meanwhile, Brad and Billie’s best friend Sasha have been casually sleeping together for about a year now — but Brad starts texting Billie after all these years, telling her he wants her back.

Brad starts texting Billie after all these years, telling her he wants her back.

Oh, and we haven’t even talked about the suburban sex club where it’s like “Eyes Wide Shut,” only with hors d’oeuvres and family photos on the mantle.

Filmed in Toronto, “Sex/Life” has a first-rate production design and some creative lighting choices; the flashback sequences are bathed in neon tones reflecting Billie’s wild lifestyle, while the scenes in present day have a bright and cheery but slightly unsettling, “Stepford Wives” vibe. The choice of songs is perfect, e.g., “Stop this Flame” by Celeste and “Big Bang Blues” by Breanna Barbara reflecting Billie’s dilemma as she yearns for Brad and has romanticized their tumultuous and destructive relationship even as she tells herself the “85%” level happiness she has with Cooper should be more than enough.

Problem is, the other 15% is … sex. The sex she had with Brad and his big brain. And Billie might just walk away from everything to recapture that feeling.

Tom Hiddleston in "Loki".

ENTERTAINMENT – “Loki” Reveals A Charmed Relationship in Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson

In Marvel Studios‘ “Loki,” the mercurial villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston) resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

A delightful diversion from the MCU as we know it, Loki successfully sees star Tom Hiddleston leap from beloved villain to endearing antihero — with a little help from Owen Wilson — in a series that’s as off-kilter, charming, and vaguely dangerous as the demigod himself.

MORE:

This begins the process of turning Loki from pure villain to an anti-hero we’ll probably end up rooting for in the coming weeks.

The first episode of Loki is complicated and at times hard to follow, yet Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Owen Wilson’s Mobius just might become a legendary buddy-cop team as the season progresses. Their verbal sparring is not only the best reason for staying with this show, but it also evolves into a poignant examination of Loki’s past and his motivation for committing evil beyond the fact that he’s the Norse God of Mischief. This begins the process of turning Loki from pure villain to an anti-hero we’ll probably end up rooting for in the coming weeks.

Tom Hiddleston stars a “Loki” on Disney Plus.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe takes a great leap both forwards and back in this time-travel tale that picks up after the events of the Avengers:Endgame movie. Executive Producer Kevin Feige keeps expanding on the storylines introduced on theatre screens for his growing TV Marvel empire (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Wandavision).

Life Means I Kick Ass! -Vela Kurv Blank Comic Book for lovers of creating their own anime and comics.

They choose to take a pretty deep dive into time-travel using the blue-box Tesseract he stole in Avengers:Endgame.

In this installment writer Michael Waldron and Director Kate Herron tackle Loki’s continued existence after his was killed in Avengers: Infinity War. They choose to take a pretty deep dive into time-travel using the blue-box Tesseract he stole in Avengers:Endgame. This manipulation of time brings him to the attention of the TVA (Time Variance Authority) which is charged with apprehending  those who would disrupt Time (Variants) and bring them to justice.

The scenes where Loki finds his powers are no match against the TVA and the floor dropping out from under him as he descends through the TVA bureaucracy show Marvel comedy and wit in full play. Before he’s about to be erased for all time, Owen Wilson as the TVA detective fascinated by Loki’s story, steps in to begin recruiting him to help solve another Variant crime-spree perhaps perpetrated by other version of Loki himself.

The Wiles of Vela Kurv” new script release.

It’s an interesting visual touch contrasting to the ultra-futuristic view outside the window.

The set design of the TVA offices are notable in that this all powerful ultimate Time Keeper Authority operates out of offices that look like they were designed by the same people who made Corning Ware in the 1960’s. It’s an interesting visual touch contrasting to the ultra-futuristic view outside the window.

While Hiddleston and Wilson carry the weight of the exposition, comedy and conflict more than ably on their shoulders, the supporting cast is also noteworthy. Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Judge Ravonna Renslayer who seems to have some kind of special relationship with Mobius. Are they just friends? It’s a nice tease for something sure to come.

There’s a very weird, entertaining vibe to this series that just begs to come back for more.

Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country) is a field officer, Hunter B-15, who only wants to turn Loki into dust. Special acknowledgement to Tara Strong who voices the animated clock in the TVA cartoons that cheerfully inform Variants of their impending doom. Finally, Eugene Cordero (Good Place) is the TVA receptionist Casey who is gleefully clueless to everything from what a fish is, to the fact he has a drawer full of Infinity Stones that are nothing more than colorful paperweights to him.

Do you storyboard your story ideas? That’s exactly what this storyboard book is for.

Sketch out your story layout and track your story visually as a writer, a director, a creator…

This multi-layered reintroduction to the Loki saga at times feels like exposition and backstory overload, but we still are anxious to see the Loki/Mobius relationship take root. There’s a very weird, entertaining vibe to this series that just begs to come back for more. “Loki” is playing on Disney+, Rating TV-14.

Jesse Stone: Stone Cold on Amazon Prime

ENTERTAINMENT – Jesse Stone Crime Drama Films Brought to Life Starring Tom Selleck

Previously a homicide detective in Los Angeles, the hard-drinking Stone has the credentials to track down the serial killer.

Continuing with my throwback look on past programing that I recently discovered as fun, entertaining, and well-conceived, this TV series review is on Jesse Stone films, starring Tom Selleck.

Jesse Stone Series

A series of strange murders sends shivers through a quiet New England town. It’s up to a hard-as-nails police chief, Jesse Stone (Tom Selleck), to find the psychopath behind the savage crimes. Previously a homicide detective in Los Angeles, the hard-drinking Stone has the credentials to track down the serial killer. The case takes an even more sinister turn when a teenage girl is raped, and Stone realizes that catching the killer will not be so easy.

Tom Selleck is well cast as Jesse Stone who is the chief of a tiny town.

Tom Selleck is well cast as Jesse Stone who is the chief of a tiny town. This is definitely not your typical made for television melodrama which was surprising. The film is well crafted and unfolds like a noir, especially with Stone’s tough guy exterior. Harmon doesn’t let the action take over the story which allows the characters to drive the film.

The Wiles of Vela Kurv” new script release.

The first of the series of films does well to establish its lead and is set perfectly for the next additions.

The support cast is quite interesting if a little underwhelming, basically because of Selleck’s powerhouse performance leading the way. Viola Davis is a series regular for the first four films, she’s young, entertaining and a joy to watch. Mimi Rogers is criminally underused and Reg Rogers is just so plain to be menacing as the villain of the film. the love story between Mimi and Selleck just seems a little forced when the film should be focusing on the death of his girlfriend. The first of the series of films does well to establish its lead and is set perfectly for the next additions.

Jesse Stone (Selleck) is a New England police chief investigating a series of murders, in an adaptation of Robert B. Parker’s novel.

Keeping Faith on BBC

ENTERTAINMENT – “Keeping Faith,” Welsch Drama, Featuring Eve Myles on Amazon Prime Video

Welsh drama is like keeping the ball in the forwards for the first 30 minutes and then slowly releasing it to the backline.

This week I’m covering past programing that I have recently discovered that is fun, entertaining, and well-conceived. The first such programming is “Keeping Faith,” starring Eve Myles, on Amazon Prime Video through Acorn TV.

Faith, a small-town Welsh lawyer, is forced to cut short her extended maternity leave when her husband and business partner, Evan, goes missing. As the truth of his actions surface, Faith must fight to protect her family and her sanity.

Welsh drama is like keeping the ball in the forwards for the first 30 minutes and then slowly releasing it to the backline. By the end of the game you’re captivated.

“Keeping Faith” season 2 trailer, a gripping thriller story.

Eve Myles proves she’s star material in Keeping Faith, a bilingual thriller that puts Wales on the prestige TV map.

Faith (Eve Myles) needs help from her husband Evan (Bradley Freegard, Myles’s real-life spouse) to squeeze into a dress. She has recently had a third child, and is about to go back to work as a lawyer. But tonight she is going out on the lash, with the girls, to celebrate someone’s – not Faith’s – divorce coming through. Evan – Mr Dependable (or is he?) – stays at home with the kids

It’s a big night out. When Faith totters home, slurring and lurching, Evan puts her to bed in the “drunk bunk” (might have to adopt that one). She really has got herself the perfect man … or has she?

________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________

In the morning, he makes the kids breakfast while she fumbles about looking for orange juice and headache cures. Then he gives her a kiss, gets in the car and drives to work. Evan is also a lawyer, at the same practice as Faith. Except today he never gets there; he disappears into thin air.

Well, it’s obvious, isn’t it, officer? He has just had enough of his annoying, chaotic wife, and family life, and small-town Wales. He has probably flown to Brazil and is starting again. But then Faith finds his passport. Not in Rio. Tenby then, where his other family is?

The Wiles of Vela Kurv” new script release.

Faith also finds a bag with a wig, and a pair of glasses, and a driving license with Evan’s face on it but a different name, Alec Fenton. And now she is wondering not just where her husband is, but who he is as well. Hang on, though, wouldn’t he have taken his disguise with him, if Alec Fenton is his alias? Maybe he is lots of different people.

For now, Evan’s more of a device, the missing husband, than an actual character. It is all about Faith, and how she deals with the situation. She is a bit annoying – wobbling around town (and country) in her heels, having another glass of chardonnay with her pal Lisa, lying on the floor a lot. But she is also very convincing, a captivating performance from Myles, warm and loud and human and believable, and a bit annoying.

MORE:

And that is pretty much symptomatic of the whole thing. Keeping Faith is not subtle. After Evan helps to shoehorn Faith into the blue dress, a daughter has a pop. “Let’s face it, there’s no room in that for a pizza,” she tells her mum, before suggesting a maternity dress instead. OK, we get it: Faith has put on a couple of pounds, she has just had a baby. Same with the hangover: it goes on – and we’re reminded of it – throughout the episode (episodes last a day); she has yet another glass of water, groans, lies on the floor again. Is it time for the hair of the dog? Faith’s definitely got a hangover.

But like the rest of it, she does hangover well. The dialogue is real, the premise intriguing, even if it is not super-original. It has that sense of community seen in Broadchurch (which Myles was also in). Faith knows the GP well enough to get from her that Evan was stressed and had had counseling. Everyone knows everyone and everything. Well, until now. I like her yellow raincoat, even if it has yet to reach the iconic level of Sarah Lund’s knitwear.

Keeping Faith is an awful name, though. Is that why she is called Faith, so they could do a punny title? What does it even mean? Who is keeping her? Will she forsake the pub for the Anglican church, turn to Him for help in finding him, and so introduce a third meaning? Anyway, its Welsh title is much better, Un Bore Mercher. This translates as One Wednesday Morning, also much better than Keeping Faith.

It was shot in both English and Welsh (which Myles learned for the role; respect). It has already been out on S4C, and has become an iPlayer hit. Chances are, if you’re Welsh you’ll probably have seen Un Bore Mercher already.

“Keeping Faith” ran for three seasons, each one well worth viewing.

That is the other star of the show: Wales. It does for Carmarthenshire (where most of it was filmed) what Broadchurch did for Dorset. Not airbrushed, too picture postcard or twee – so there are bungalows and caravans, as well as historic castles, guildhalls, the estuary and beach. Nor is made to look bleak and dark – this is not Cambrian noir, if that is a thing. It looks real and brilliant and Welsh.
