Sometime occurrences within the execution of a command’s long-term mission are outside the realm of your control. Captain Picard is at a loss to intervene on a promise made a longtime ago by Counselor Troi to wed Wyatt Miller. Picard can lose his valued officer who has special counsel abilities – she can read the emotions of all negotiating parties for Captain Picard – as he performs his command and diplomatic duties. About all Picard can do to counter her leaving, is offer her betrothed a home with his wife aboard ship. Miller’s medical abilities as a physician would be welcomed by Dr. Crusher, but alas it is not to be.

The wedding is canceled when Miller, chooses to take up residence with the Tarellians in hope of finding a cure for their plague and fulfilling his lifelong dream of uniting with one of the Tarellians who he’s dreamed about his entire life. Counselor Troi embraces Miller’s choice, this was a promise she never thought she would have to fulfill, so Picard is off the hook to replace one special officer he has begun to build a valued relationship with. Sometimes there are unexpected benefits that find their way to the responsibilities of your command.

Vela Kurv Sees the Trouble Brewing in Star Trek Voyager’s “Prime Factors”

What begins as signs of crew camaraderie between two merged crews (Voyager and Maquis) becoming one, winds up as one crews’ willed conspiracy to get home in their lifetime. The new Voyager crew makes a clandestine exchange without Janeway’s authorization for a Sikarian trajectory believed to provide transporter-like conveyance across 40,000 light-years, more than half the 70,000 (equating to 70 years travel time) needed to get Voyager home to Earth. Uniting these crews in this scenario also unifies their single purpose, but also defies Janeway’s orders tied to Starfleet regulations which forbid the violation of local (Sikaris) law.

Janeway finds that her own torn convictions of following Starfleet regulations in this situation conflicts with her primary objective which is to explore for wormholes and any special technology that would cut years off Voyager’s journey home. Unfortunately binding principles forbid her from negotiating with the Sikarian’s unofficial channel to acquire the trajector. In the end, all unauthorized means is exposed by B’Elanna and to Janeway’s surprise her trusted friend and Chief of Security Officer, Tuvok.

Janeway threatens B’Elanna against such treacherous actions in the future. She also warns Tuvok to consult with her before acting in such an egregious manner because she relies on Tuvok’s constrained practice of moral guide to keep her in check with Starfleet’s binding principles. This Starfleet moral code is absolute to Janeway but in the end will it prove to garner her crew’s loyalty and regard despite the long journey home? Such a choice is a tall one to make for the sake of command. But probably worth the calluses if character can take the heat and conviction. This soldier asks: how high must the sacrifice be for the sake of moral compass? This is the question of command and the commitment required to serve and protect.

Vela Kurv Experiences “Emanations” from Star Trek Voyager

Captain Janeway engenders the seeds of loyalty as she builds the relationships in a crew that has been created out of the ship’s current plight of loss in the Delta Quadrant. In this scenario, Janeway has limited reserves of choice for crew positions, since a number of her crew were killed when they were pulled into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker (see second blog entry “Vela Kurv on Star Trek Voyager’s ‘Caretaker’ Pilot Episode”). She has to fill open positions including second-in-command (Chakotay) and chief engineer (B’Elanna Torres) with Maquis whom she was originally assigned to bring in for their renegade work outside the command of Starfleet.Even the initial Voyager crew is green to their positions since they were just assigned to them when they were lost in the Delta Quadrant. Janeway is building loyalty and respect from two crews who have only just begun to work with her. She proves her devotion to holding her crew together by actively pursuing Operations Officer, Harry Kim who vanishes into a subspace vacuole as he is performing his duty on an away team that is on an asteroid investigating deposits of a 247th element in the ring system of a Class-D planet.

Kim believes his captain will not abandon him and he is right. He participates in a death ritual in order to return to Voyager, because he believes he can be revived once returned to his own dimension, as the Ktarians describe his existence. Thankfully for Kim, he is scanned, revived and returned to Voyager. Janeway also encourages Kim to take two days leave in order to reflect on the enormity of his experience. Kim is trying to reconcile the Ktarians strong belief system of an afterlife, when all he has seen is the physical remains deposited on the asteroids in the ring system of the Class-D planet. It is Janeway that helps to guide his perception; somehow their energy is deposited into the ring system every time their remains are deposited onto the asteroids.

In this case, Captain Janeway proves her loyalty to her crew and her returned crewmate. She returns acknowledged respect for his experience by allowing him to process and apply what he’s been through for the betterment of his own career. The beginnings of trust and respect are nurtured by this Star Trek Captain. I hope the beginnings of my command only fair as well.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS – NASA thinks alien life might be hiding in ancient caves on Mars

Scientists think if there is life on Mars it’s likely to be hidden in deep underground caves.

This theory is supported by Nasa experts and the US space agency will be sending a new rover to the red planet this summer.

According to Space.com, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory research scientist Vlada Stamenković explained the Martian underground life theory at a recent space event.

Speaking at the Mars Extant Life conference, Stamenković reportedly said: “The surface of Mars is a very oxidizing, radiation-heavy environment where liquid water is not really stable for an extended amount of time.

“It’s the worst place to look for life-sites on Mars.

“Groundwater might be the only habitat for extant life on Mars, if it still exists today.”

The surface of Mars is cold, dry and there is lots of radiation. More…

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS – ‘Star Trek: Picard’: Patrick Stewart on Why He Returned to the Final Frontier

Next to an armchair in Patrick Stewart’s living room in Brooklyn sits a small table, and on it a black three-ring binder. The 79-year-old actor leans in and clasps his hands when recounting his upbringing in the North of England. He stands and paces when a subject such as Brexit or Donald Trump aggravates him. All the while, he touches the binder over and over again — tapping it, thumbing through it, waving it around.Inside is the script for Stewart’s one-man stage adaptation of “A Christmas Carol,” which he began performing three decades ago, around the same time he originated the role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” It’s early December, and next week Stewart, for the first time in 16 years, will once again perform “A Christmas Carol” — in which he portrays more than 30 characters. The run: just two nights at a 99-seat theater on 54th Street. From Variety … more

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS – Billie Eilish Drops James Bond Theme Song ‘No Time to Die’

With six Grammys, 13 platinum singles and one of the biggest debut albums in recent memory, Billie Eilish has already conquered the music world and has moved on to film. After performing a unique take on the Beatles’ classic “Yesterday” at the Academy Awards last weekend, the singer has dropped the theme song to the forthcoming James Bond film “No Time to Die,” which comes out April 10. The song is the second she and brother/musical collaborator Finneas have dropped since the spring release of her blockbuster debut full-length, “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?,” after “Everything I Wanted,” which dropped late last year.

No Time to Die” is slow and ominous, with Eilish flexing the high, quavery register of her voice in a way not unlike her take on “Yesterday.” But the Bond-ian touch comes when an orchestra swells in the background, gaining intensity as the song progresses before it closes with a twangy guitar chord that subtly evokes the Bond themes of the ’60s.  The song includes legendary Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, with orchestral arrangements by Hans Zimmer and Matt Dunkley. ENTERTAINMENT NEWS – Robert Pattinson’s ‘Batman’ Suit Revealed by Director Matt Reeves

Director Matt Reeves revealed the first look at Robert Pattinson as Batman in his upcoming “The Batman.”

In the new footage, set to an ominous score by composer Michael Giacchino, Pattinson steps into a dark frame saturated in red light, as his sleek and angular Batman suit slowly comes into focus.

Last September, Pattinson told Variety‘s Ramin Setoodeh that he grew up as a massive fan of director Tim Burton’s 1989 and 1992 “Batman” movies. Once he heard that Reeves was rebooting the Caped Crusader series for Warner Bros., he actively pursued the part.

“I’d had Batman in my mind for a while,” Pattinson said. “It’s such an absurd thing to say. I sort of had an idea to do it, and I’d been prodding Matt. He didn’t accept any prods. I kept asking to meet him.” From Variety…

Fall into Temptation (Blue Moon, #2) Book Review

I am definitely a fan of this series, written by Lucy Score. Blue Moon is filled with intelligent, family focused residents who are driven to want to fall in love. The town seems drawn to good hearted heroes and delicious intrigue to resolve the mystery behind the two that are destined to find each other but challenged to resolve their differences in the most unique setups. I find the stories filled with lighthearted fun that also makes me laugh and giggle and curious to see how the stories will find their romantic end. The originality of each step is what I enjoy the most. Blue Moon is just a lot of Rom-Com fun!
