Vela Kurv Views “Initiations” on Star Trek Voyager

Vela Kurv Academy School Log

Captain Janeway allows her second-in-command, Chakotay to take a personal leave aboard a shuttlecraft. Chakotay is attacked by a lone Kazon youth who has to prove himself by killing a Federation enemy. Chakotay’s shuttlecraft is destroyed in the incident, after he escapes capture in hopes of somehow finding his freedom and leaving a trail for Voyager to find and follow.

Chakotay finds out that Federation values are not shared by the Kazon, moreover, these values are not held in regard in any manner. Chakotay makes a choice to sacrifice his life for the young Kazon and the Kazon intern realizes his true enemy is his leader he’s been trying to prove his name for, not Chakotay. The young Kazon does earn his name by killing the Kazon leader that vowed to make an example of his own failure to kill Chakotay, and kills him.

Chakotay is a capable commander in his own right, but he is obviously impressed by Janeway’s own optimism and desire to find a way home for her lost crew. Her positive focus and determined choice to follow the ethical path of Starfleet even though her crew is 70,000+ light-years from home, earns her respect from this former renegade Maquis captain. I hope that the lessons I learn from reviewing these captains’ journeys are just a positively impressionable on me and my demands of command.

Vela Kurv Watches and Observes “Projections” on Star Trek Voyager

Vela Kurv Academy School Log

This is a lesson for Captain Janeway in trusting the ability of a new piece of technology that is taking on an actual persona. The doctor (or the Emergency Medical Hologram) experiences a series of malfunctions in its programming attributed to circuit degradation. Curious enough, the doctor later reports that the malfunctions caused him to become delusional and to wonder about the nature of his own existence. This doctor is a piece of technology that is exhibiting signs of being sentient.

Janeway interestingly enough also questions the doctor, once his programming malfunctions have been corrected. She wants to make sure that he is cognizant of his corrections and in a stable state-of-mind. Janeway seems respectful of her crew’s development and willing to give them a chance to prove their own objectives. This is a leader that oversees, guides, and then confidently lets go. This is an excellent example for someone like me who is studying to become a new leader.
