Vela Kurv is Intrigued by “The 37’s” on Star Trek Voyager

Vela Kurv Academy School Log

Captain Janeway orders the landing of the Starship Voyager on a planet that is discovered by an investigation of anomalous ferric oxide particles. The crew is astonished to find a ’37 Chevy floating in space. Janeway is even more astonished after landing on the unidentified planet and resultantly finding Amelia Earhart with several other humans held in cryostasis. All of the ‘37s disappeared from Earth in 1937; obviously these survivors are duly named.
This discovery creates a world of choices for Janeway and her crew. Do they choose to stay on a planet where humans have procreated and created a similar world to 24th century Earth and settle or do they continue on their very long journey home? Ultimately all choose to continue toward home. Janeway is relieved; I think she wants the opportunity to return this crew to their origins since her decision to protect the Ocampans rendered the Voyager crew stranded in the Delta Quadrant.
Sometimes difficult decisions also carry consequences with a heavy burden. But the consequences would have been greater, had Janeway allowed the Kazon-Ogla to conquer the Ocampans and take over the Caretaker’s powerful spaceborne array. Recognizing the ultimate threat and balancing the scales of inequity in a fair just manner if at all, is the burden of leadership. This is a burden that I will soon bear.

Vela Kurv Learns About “The Neutral Zone” on Star Trek TNG

Vela Kurv Academy School Log

Awaiting Captain Picard’s return, Lieutenant Commander Data discovers a derelict spacecraft that contains the cryogenically preserved remains of humans who died in the late 20th century. Picard returns from a Starfleet conference and orders the Enterprise into “The Neutral Zone”. Federation outposts at Delta Zero Five and Tarod IX near the Romulan Neutral Zone are discovered to have been destroyed but not by Romulans. Romulans are an alien race in an uneasy truce inside the Star Trek Universe.

Picard determines that an unknown agency has literally scooped the outposts off their planetary surfaces; the Romulans do not have the capability to execute such a feat. Picard must also deal with the revival complaints of humans now revived by 24th century medical cures of 20th century maladies. These revived humans are later returned to Earth aboard the U.S.S. Charleston over several months journey, allowing these 20th century humans to adjust to the lifestyle and changes of the 24th century.
Leadership has many different aspects. Picard (reluctantly) has to deal with 20th century transitions of revived humans while investigating the destruction of Federation outposts along the Neutral Zone. Being able to transition between the differing dictates of command is the challenge of a strong leader. A challenge this leader reluctantly passed.
