Captain Janeway orders the landing of the Starship Voyager on a planet that is discovered by an investigation of anomalous ferric oxide particles. The crew is astonished to find a ’37 Chevy floating in space. Janeway is even more astonished after landing on the unidentified planet and resultantly finding Amelia Earhart with several other humans held in cryostasis. All of the ‘37s disappeared from Earth in 1937; obviously these survivors are duly named.
This discovery creates a world of choices for Janeway and her crew. Do they choose to stay on a planet where humans have procreated and created a similar world to 24th century Earth and settle or do they continue on their very long journey home? Ultimately all choose to continue toward home. Janeway is relieved; I think she wants the opportunity to return this crew to their origins since her decision to protect the Ocampans rendered the Voyager crew stranded in the Delta Quadrant.
Sometimes difficult decisions also carry consequences with a heavy burden. But the consequences would have been greater, had Janeway allowed the Kazon-Ogla to conquer the Ocampans and take over the Caretaker’s powerful spaceborne array. Recognizing the ultimate threat and balancing the scales of inequity in a fair just manner if at all, is the burden of leadership. This is a burden that I will soon bear.
