Vela Kurv is Intrigued in “The Man Trap” Episode of Star Trek The Original Series

I am particularly intrigued by Captain James T. Kirk. Kirk became Starfleet’s youngest captain when he received command of the USS Enterprise for a five-year mission. He holds his command in high regard, yet exudes a tremendous amount of passion. He is quite a contrast to Picard and to Janeway, but of course, he was first.

In “The Man Trap” his own life is threatened and this is the thread that forces the ship’s chief medical officer, Leonard McCoy, M.D., to fire and kill what appears to be a former love in his life. His old flame is the last of its kind indigenous to planet M-113. It extracts sodium chloride from its victims’ and it claims three casualties before its true identity is discovered. What’s clear about the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is the loyalty and regard they hold for their captain. Kirk is obviously devoted to his command, his ship, and his crew. Such devotion garners unwavering returned regard. The time portrayed is also a factor, a time of new exploration and optimism.

Vela Kurv Academy School Log

Captain Picard of the Starship Enterprise-D must dismantle the shield of the planet, thought to be mythical, Aldea. Aldea’s leaders direct the abduction of several children of the Enterprise-D crew members. The Aldeans want to reestablish their society, rendered infertile due to radiation exposure caused by damage to their ozone layer. Once again, Picard’s diplomatic tactics are successful in reconciling a superior powers impasse to free the crew’s kidnapped children.

Moreover, Picard orders Crusher and the ships’ engineers to reseed the Aldean ozone layer, a move expected to reverse the sterility of the Aldean people. Picard’s method of complete understanding and negotiating from a complete picture of all the facts is effective. His methods continue to expand his crew’s respect of his leadership. They have definitely impressed this cadet’s opinion of effective command ability.
