Vela Kurv Examines “Cathexis” in the Star Trek Voyager

Vela Kurv Academy School Log

Captain Janeway must determine who the real alien threat is when two entities are found to exist aboard the Star ship Voyager. Commander Chakotay and Chief of Security Tuvok return from an away mission and Chakotay has suffered depletion of all his neural energy. Thought to be brain-dead, Chakotay aids the crew in defending against a trioloic-based being called the Komar. The Komar live inside the nebula Chakotay and Tuvok were investigating so the ship returns to it seeking the weapon and/or attacker of Chakotay so that the ship’s Emergency Medical Hologram can devise a cure.

Thanks to Chakotay the crew escapes and the Emergency Medical Hologram is successful in reintegrating Chakotay’s disembodied intellect with his body. Janeway is able to deduct with technological deduction that Chakotay’s non-corporeal form is the defending entity trying to prevent Voyager from reentering the nebula. Her reasoning allows the crew to concentrate their defense with Chakotay’s guide on a course that leads the ship to freedom.

Protecting and preserving the integrity of the crew and their health and well being is a primary objective of a commander. The oath to serve works to aid crew and/or staff just as much as it does to defend one’s country; the oath to defend against such attack, I take to heart.

Vela Kurv Reviews the Challenges of “Heroes and Demons” With Star Trek Voyager

Vela Kurv Academy School Log

In Star Trek TNG’s “Too Short a Season” a planetary commander’s greed for conquest leads a Starfleet commander to give weapons that cause years of civil war. In “Heroes and Demons” aboard the Star Trek Voyager, Janeway orders chief engineer Torres to beam aboard photonic energy for study and use aboard this ship now lost in the Delta Quadrant and suspect to over a 70 year journey home. Further investigation suggests that the energy released during a study of a protostar is the cause of the crew members’ (Harry Kim, Chakotay, and Tuvok’s) conversion into energy.

Janeway orders the Emergency Medical Hologram (the doctor) to investigate and come-up with a plan to save the crew. The doctor releases the photonic-life form  captured by Voyager and in return causes the restoration of the missing crew to solid form.

This captain’s trust of learned training is successful. Information, education, and trust of conveyed principles of justice are well blended into a positive recovery for this captain and her crew. Technology and justice are key to the solution here, an excellent example for me of thinking outside the box.
