Vela Kurv Watches Hostage Negotiation in “Too Short a Season” from Star Trek TNG

Vela Kurv Academy School Log

The Enterprise-D transports an elderly Starfleet Admiral Mark Jameson to negotiate a hostage crisis on planet Mordan IV. Picard assembles the clues of a celebrated deal gone bad made by Jameson some 45 years ago. Picard finds out that he was able to win the hostage release from his old conflict nemesis Karnas of Mordan IV by giving weapons for hostages that resulted in a bloody civil war.

Revenge for Modan IV’s years of war drives Karnas to find Jameson to negotiate another hostage deal when he learns that Jameson is still alive. A suspicious Jameson takes a de-aging drug to regain his health and lead a planned hostage rescue from Karnas. In the end, Jameson’s de-aging drug causes his death but only after he reaches the planet and confronts Karnas. Jameson determined that Karnas staged the hostage deal to exact revenge. His death convinces Karnas to release the hostages to Picard.

Picard also convinces Karnas that his actions of weapon use that continued the civil war were just as much to blame as Jameson’s were for giving the weapons to both battling sects. Picard believes quite strongly in diplomacy over war, as the practice of Starfleet governance warrants. All aspects of diplomacy should be considered, the merit to Picard here is because he is a military commander, and yet he rarely resorts to battle. He visibly chooses intellect over brute force. A lesson well taught and hopefully well learned. Only time for me will tell if this lesson sinks into this cadet.

Vela Kurv Looks and Learns the Technological Delicacies of Episode “11001001” of Star Trek TNG

Vela Kurv Academy School Log

Both Captain Picard and second-in-command Riker are caught by surprise when the Enterprise-D receives a scheduled maintenance layover at Starbase 74. The service and upgrades are performed by a special team from planet Bynaus. The Bynars work in pairs and their intelligence in integrated into their home planet’s main computer system inside the Beta Magellan system.

Unbeknownst to Picard or Riker, the Bynar’s planetary computer is damaged when Beta Magellan goes supernova and with computational efficiency the Bynars take over the Enterprise, convince all of the crew to evacuate due to the threat of a catastrophic failure of the ship’s antimatter containment fields. As soon as the ship leaves space dock, the threat disappears and Picard and Riker realize they have been captured by the superior holodeck programming of the Bynars.

Both Picard and Riker save the day, reboot the Bynar’s computer and diplomatically explain to the Bynar’s that their methods could have been better executed by just asking for help. The Bynar’s explain that the threat was so great to their world’s survival they could not risk a rejection from Starfleet. They freely turn themselves over for a hearing and the Enterprise is released and returned to Starbase 74 where the crew boards ship again. Knowing the schematics and technological functions of the ship or vessel one commands is vital as well as working well with your second-in-command. Harmony begets the exploration of clear alternatives and solutions.
